A Clinical Study on the Colorectal Carcinoma



Abstract
A clinical analysis was done for 214 cases of colon and rectal cancer who were treated surgically at the department of surgery, Pusan National University Hospital from January 1982. To December 1991.
@ES The result obtained were summerized as follows;
@EN 1) There was 110 male patients(51.4%) and 104 female patients(48.6%). There was also a large number of patients in 6 th decade 65 cases(30.4%). The male to female ratio was 1.1 : 1.
2) The most common location of tumor was rectum(59.3%) and the next were sigmoid colon (14.0%), ascending colon(13.1%), descending colon(8.4%), transverse colon(5.2%).
3) The most frequent symptoms and signs were abdominal pain 114 cases(53.3%), weight loss 66 cases(30.8%), altered bowel habit 112 cases(52.3%) in the right colon and left colon cancer Melena 110 cases(51.4%), altered bowel habit, abdominal pain
in the
rectal cancer.
4) The duration of the symptoms and and signs prior to admission were less than six months in 61.7%.
5) The most common surgical procedure was Miles' abdominoperineal resection(36.5%), and the next were right hemicolectomy(15.6%) and anterior resection(12.6%).
6) The most common histological type was adenocarcinoma(94.4%) and the next was squamous cell carcinoma(3.3%).
7) The stage of tumor were Dukes' classification A in 19.2%, B1 in 8.9%, B2 in 15.4%, C1 in 27.6%, C2 in 6.1%, D1 in 7.9%, D2 in 14.9%.
8) The most common site of distant metastasis was pelvic organ(13.1%), and the next was liver(8.4%), small intestine(1.9%).
9) Postoperative complication were developed in 22.4% of total case and the most common complication was wound infection(10.3%), the next was intestinal obstruction(4.2%) and pulmonary complication(3.7%).
